CH 22 DOCS (1120-1135)

From Islam to America

This part of the section we had to read really stood out to me. A women feared to disobey the Allah. Throughout University he questioned many things. She was exposed to seeing battered women, and many individuals living under harsh circumstances. She did not understand how her religion connected with the oppression of women, and the lack of free individual choice. She thought to herself, that she could "no longer be a Muslim".

Islam's treatment of women: Women serving in households are cleaner's and cooks. They had to comply with their fathers choice of mate, and after marriage . . . as a women they had to devote themselves to the sexual pleasure of their husbands - education was very limited, if not taken away, and devoted themselves to raising the children.

All because Muslim's are to believe that Muhammad, the founder of their religion, was virtuous, and individual's should never question this (All commands should be obeyed, without question).

The founder of their religion states that women are worth half as much as a man.

I consider myself very feminist, and while reading this part of the passage I just couldn't believe how women  could adapt, follow, or even accept of these traditions?  Is there no way to avoid it? Will they get severely punished if they do not follow original custom traditions? Is it that I am too open minded?

I have a problem with authority, and I would never be able to live under certain conditions such as the ones states on page 1129 - where I would basically have no say, and be worth nothing, or seen less than to men. I always have something to say. I know I am worth more than half as much as a man, and I refuse to be seen less than men simply for being born a women.

WW1 & WW2

After reading about WW1,  WW2, and Hitler I was just shocked about how crazy our society is, and continues to be. I realized that as individuals we tend to find "solutions", or take extreme measures to find solutions to problems we can't fix easily. In Hitler's case, he was a failed artists, student, and ended up joining the Nazi Party - which started with 50 people and grew extensively in a very short period of time. I actually went to the Museum of Tolerance over the weekend, and got to interact with someone who survived the Holocaust themselves. I had been to this same museum in high school, and I felt very fortunate being able to interact with someone who has survived the Holocaust. She told us how only herself, and four other cousins survived the Holocaust along with an uncle. She was separated from her father, and mother. At the age of 18 she was freed, and went back home. Nothing was left, but the four empty walls.

All of this reminded me of our current time period with Trump running for president, and honestly it is terrifying. The Holocaust was the only genocide that I am aware of that was legal/ supported by their government, and that the government supported. All I can think of is, "How is it possible that after overcoming slavery,  Civil Rights Movement, etc, some individuals still continue to support such ideologies like Trumps." It is just astonishing to believe that after all we have not really overcome much, and that there is still a lot that we have to work on to improve our system which we live under. During the Holocaust, Jews were unable to speak up - otherwise they were automatically sentencing themselves, but now we have freedom of speech and press, and if we can we should stand up for what we believe to detain such things from happening.

PG 931-957 & 958-971

China began depending on Europeans.

In order for Japan to avoid conflict with the Europeans, they agreed to a series of unequal treaties with various Western Powers. (They did not want them to go through what China went through for resisting)

Japan, U.S., Europe - POWER & AUTHORITY

Japan avoided contact with the Europeans until very last minute. Japan was able to acquire a stable government without massive violence and destruction. To work on genuine national unity they established taxes, and only this way were they able to raise a national army.

March 15, 2016 CHAPTER 18 (PGS 879-912) & DOCS (ppg 922 - 929)

" What is man? I have my own money"expressed the growing economic independence of such women. pg 901

This part of the reading really spoke out to me. I have seen my mother rely on my father on everything, and for everything. He has been very responsible, and had made sure to provide us with all of the basic needs that are required, but I personally do not like the idea of relying on anybody - whether that's on a man or anyone in general. I strongly believe that we should be independent, and do as we please. As women we shouldn't have to rely on men for anything - we should be able to do as we please and when we please to do so. The idea of relying on men, makes me believe/ feel as we don't have any authority or say, and I don't approve of that, and I don't like that at all. The way I see it, I'm going to school to get a degree in financial accounting, and I hope to exercise my field of study in the near future - so that I don't need to rely on anyone for anything - so that I can be financially, mentally, and physically stable. This phrase from the text reminded me of a quote that I relate to, " I never want to hear the words, " You wouldn't have that if it wasn't for me". I feel like this phrase just truly speaks to me, and in a sense helps to identify the kind of person that I am - independent, passionate, and strong, and reminds me of another favorite phrase of mine, "ad altiora tendo" . . meaning I strive towards higher things. I'm always striving to be the best I can be.
